The One State and the Benefactor instigate the Table of Hours to prevent growth of the imagination, which may develop and foster the mechanical identity. Preventing the progress of imagination within the society becomes a key to stunting the growth of identity. Yang Jianfang finds that, â€Å"†¦the more central an identity is to an individual, the more likely this identity is to impact cognitions, feelings, and actions†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Jianfang 167). These feelings, cognitions, and actions all relate to imagination, since imagination is found to sometimes create these feelings and cognitions which influence actions. Within the Table of Hours there are two personal hours, leaving everything else in day scheduled. D-503 hopes for the removal of these Personal Hours. He â€Å"believe[s] that sooner or later, one day, we’ll find a place in the general formula for these hours too, one day all of the 86,400 seconds will be accounted for in the Table of Hours.†(We page 13). By removing these two hours, the government would remove all freedom. Within these Personal Hours, a cipher is allowed to draw, write, meet with another cipher, walk, or run where they please. Ciphers are also allowed to lower the blinds in their rooms in order to have sex with another during these two Personal Hours; these are the only times the blinds can be lowered, and both ciphers must have a permission from the One State. If a cipher is doing anything other than having sex, the blinds may not be lowered. This obvious lack of privacy encourages a sense of unity but a lack of identity. These ciphers have nothing that is their own, nothing that they can hide from other ciphers as something personal. By giving ciphers a name of combined letters and numbers, the government has also found another way to succeed in removing individual identity. Skip Eisiminger states that â€Å"†¦ all names are intrinsic parts of their bearers’ identity and deserve respect† (Eisminger 2). Indeed, the government’s lack of respect towards the ciphers names and identities exemplifies the negative sentiments of the government regarding the idea of individual identity. D-503 identifies more as a machine than as a human because he is given the name of a machine. The sense of identity is still engrained into the subconscious of these ciphers as D-503 shows even as he finds identity and individualism to be unsettling. Many of the female ciphers that D-503 comes into contact with are descri bed by D-503 using their names. D-503 describes O-90 as having soft edges, a roundness, and a half moon as a mouth. These adjectives are correlated to her name in which the letter â€Å"O† is circular and round. D-503 also gives I-330 characteristics that are sharp, angled, and harsh as the letter â€Å"I† in her name. As little as these identifying characteristics are, they show that even a cipher as brainwashed as D-503 still has a sense of identity within his subconscious. These successes in removing identity by the One State are thwarted by cipher I-330 in various ways. Many of her choices are self-harming and seem very small, but her use of D-503 shows that her goal is to get rid of the One State, thereby restoring the individual sense of identity. D-503 is always told to meet I-330 at the Ancient House, often during times when he is supposed to be somewhere else according to the Table of Hours. During his time there, D-503 sees I-330 put on the clothes of the Anc ients and drink and smoke as the Ancients did. In making her own choices, I-330 identifies herself as a rebel. Her goal to use D-503 to break down the One State is a fight that, though unsuccessful, keeps I-330 going and makes her an individual with an identity and an imagination. Within V for Vendetta, the government’s control over identity is far less strict than within We, but it still amounts to control over individualism and identity. The government control through concentration camps and the regulations and controls outside of the concentration camp restricts the amount of individuality and identity that the futuristic British are allowed. The majority of the men and women taken to these concentration camps are homosexuals and radicals that opposed the government. The threat of the concentration camps cause many people to be the government’s ideal citizens. To help keep people within this â€Å"ideal† mold of distinctiveness, the government began instituting controls through the use of the eye, the ear, the mouth, and curfews. By enforcing curfews, the government could control the whereabouts and activities of the population. Moreover, the government used the news to help keep the knowledge to the citizens limited. The â€Å"mouthâ €  of the government, or television, was used to give only the knowledge that they felt the citizens needed to hear. By changing the bombing of the houses of Parliament into a â€Å"scheduled demolition undertaken at night to avoid traffic congestion†¦[and the fireworks] a freak effect of the blast† (Moore and Lloyd 17) the government could keep tabs and compress any ideas of revolution or revolt. Using the mouth and television to give the citizens approved information, the government can alter identities to be more of the mold that they are gearing towards. The â€Å"ear† of the government placed microphones in homes of citizens and bugged telephones. Based on what was said, the government could come in and â€Å"black bag,† or kidnap, the citizen. By reducing the expression of self-identification and cultural differences, the government made the idea of autonomy less and less prominent within this society. Lack of freedom of speech keeps citizens from identifying themselves through agreeing or disagreeing with topics and discussions. Answering these extreme methods with extreme measures of his own, V stages his fight for freedom to expresses identity as an extreme, almost terroristic fight. V spent time in one of the concentration camps. His entire identity name, demeanor, goals, characteristics are based on that concentration camp and the room he was forced to stay in. His room number, five, was written in Roman Numerals as a V, creating an entire new persona. After destroying the camp, he set out to find those who made him become this. V also conveys his harsh experience to Evey in a simulation, to break her and create a new person. He claims that he is setting her free from â€Å"happiness†¦the most insidious prison of all† (Moore and Lloyd 168) but in reality, she is gaining a new identity which becomes clear when she becomes V’s successor by the same name. Through his fight, V shows how much the government has control over identities using these regulations. He fights to end this control and give the people their own chances at freedom, individuality, and their own chosen identity. The amount of effort that dystopian governments put into forcing people to become something they are not and to have an identity that is not theirs is somehow always thwarted in a typical novel’s pages. Among Moira in The Handmaid’s Tale, I-330 in We, and V in V for Vendetta, there will always be a character to prove that having one’s own identity is a better and brighter choice. Short Grammar Activities for ESL Classes

These easy to implement and quick to execute grammar exercises are perfect to use in the ESL classroom when youre short on time but need to get your lesson across.   Jumbled Sentences Purpose: Word Order / Review Choose a number of sentences from the last few chapters (pages) that you have been working on in class. Make sure to choose a nice mixture including adverbs of frequency, time signifiers, adjectives, and adverbs, as well as multiple clauses for more advanced classes. Type (or write on the board) jumbled versions of the sentences and ask the students to reassemble them. Variation:  If you are focusing on specific grammar points, have the students explain why certain words are placed in certain places in a sentence. Example: If you are working on adverbs of frequency, ask students why often is placed as it is in the following negative sentence: He doesnt often go to the cinema. Finishing the Sentence Purpose: Tense Review Ask students to take a piece of paper out for a dictation. Ask students to finish the sentences that you begin. Students should complete the sentence you begin in a logical manner. Its best if you use connecting words to show cause and effect, conditional sentences are also a good idea. Examples: I like watching television because...Despite the cold weather,...If I were you,...I wish he... Listening for Mistakes Purpose: Improving Students Listening Abilities/Review Make up a story on the spot (or read something you have at hand). Tell students that they will hear a few grammatical errors during the story. Ask them to raise their hand when they hear an error made and correct the errors. Intentionally introduce errors into the story, but read the story as if the errors were perfectly correct. Variation:  Have students write down the mistakes you make and check the mistakes as a class when finished. Question Tag Interviews Purpose: Focus on Auxiliary Verbs Ask students to pair up with another student they feel they know reasonably well. Ask each student to prepare a set of ten different questions using question tags about that person based on what they know about him/her. Make the exercise more challenging by asking that each question is in a different tense (or that five tenses are used, etc.). Ask students to respond with short answers only. Examples: Youre married, arent you? - Yes, I am.You came to school yesterday, didnt you? - Yes, I did.You havent been to Paris, have you? - No, I havent.

The Capture of Inca Atahualpa

On November 16, 1532, Atahualpa, lord of the Inca Empire, was attacked and captured by Spanish conquistadors under Francisco Pizarro. Once he was captured, the Spanish forced him to pay a mind-boggling ransom amounting to tons of gold and silver. Although Atahualpa produced the ransom, the Spanish executed him anyway. Atahualpa and the Inca Empire in 1532: Atahualpa was the reigning Inca (a word similar in meaning to King or Emperor) of the Inca Empire, which stretched from present-day Colombia into parts of Chile. Atahualpas father, Huayna Capac, had died sometime around 1527: his heir apparent died around the same time, throwing the Empire into chaos. Two of Huayna Capacs many sons began to fight over the Empire: Atahualpa had the support of Quito and the northern part of the Empire and Huà ¡scar had the support of Cuzco and the southern part of the Empire. More importantly, Atahualpa had the allegiance of three great generals: Chulcuchima, Rumià ±ahui and Quisquis. In early 1532 Huà ¡scar was defeated and captured and Atahualpa was lord of the Andes. Pizarro and the Spanish: Francisco Pizarro was a seasoned soldier and conquistador who had played a large role in the conquest and exploration of Panama. He was already a wealthy man in the New World, but he believed that there was a rich native kingdom somewhere in South America just waiting to be plundered. He organized three expeditions along the Pacific coast of South America between 1525 and 1530. On his second expedition, he met with representatives of the Inca Empire. On the third journey, he followed tales of great wealth inland, eventually making his way to the town of Cajamarca in November of 1532. He had about 160 men with him, as well as horses, arms and four small cannons. The Meeting in Cajamarca: Atahualpa happened to be in Cajamarca, where he was waiting for the captive Huà ¡scar to be brought to him. He heard rumors of this strange group of 160 foreigners making their way inland (looting and pillaging as they went) but he certainly felt secure, as he was surrounded by several thousand veteran warriors. When the Spanish arrived in Cajamarca on November 15, 1532, Atahualpa agreed to meet with them the next day. Meanwhile, the Spanish had seen for themselves the riches of the Inca Empire and with a desperation born of greed, they decided to try and capture the Emperor. The same strategy had worked for Hernà ¡n Cortà ©s some years before in Mexico. The Battle of Cajamarca: Pizarro had occupied a town square in Cajamarca. He placed his cannons on a rooftop and hid his horsemen and footsoldiers in buildings around the square. Atahualpa made them wait on the sixteenth, taking his time to arrive for the royal audience. He eventually showed up in the late afternoon, carried on a litter and surrounded by many important Inca noblemen. When Atahualpa showed up, Pizarro sent Father Vicente de Valverde out to meet with him. Valverde spoke to the Inca through an interpreter and showed him a breviary. After leafing through it, Atahualpa disdainfully threw the book on the ground. Valverde, supposedly angry at this sacrilege, called on the Spanish to attack. Instantly the square was packed with horsemen and footmen, slaughtering natives and fighting their way to the royal litter. The Massacre at Cajamarca: The Inca soldiers and noblemen were taken completely by surprise. The Spanish had several military advantages which were unknown in the Andes. The natives had never seen horses before and were unprepared to resist mounted foes. The Spanish armor made them nearly invulnerable to native weapons and steel swords hacked easily through native armor. The cannon and muskets, fired from the rooftops, rained thunder and death down into the square. The Spanish fought for two hours, massacring thousands of natives, including many important members of the Inca nobility. Horsemen rode down fleeing natives in the fields around Cajamarca. No Spaniard was killed in the attack and Emperor Atahualpa was captured. Atahualpas Ransom: Once the captive Atahualpa was made to understand his situation, he agreed to a ransom in exchange for his freedom. He offered to fill a large room once with gold and twice over with silver and the Spanish quickly agreed. Soon great treasures were being brought from all over the Empire, and greedy Spaniards broke them into pieces so that the room would fill more slowly. On July 26, 1533, however, the Spanish became frightened at rumors that Inca General Rumià ±ahui was in the vicinity and they executed Atahualpa, supposedly for treason in stirring up rebellion against the Spaniards. Atahualpa’s ransom was a great fortune: it added up to some 13,000 pounds of gold and twice that much silver. Sadly, much of the treasure was in the form of priceless works of art which were melted down. Aftermath of the Capture of Atahualpa: The Spanish caught a lucky break when they captured Atahualpa. First of all, he was in Cajamarca, which is relatively close to the coast: had he been in Cuzco or Quito the Spanish would have had a harder time getting there and the Inca may have struck first at these insolent invaders. The natives of the Inca Empire believed that their royal family was semi-divine and they would not lift a hand against the Spanish while Atahualpa was their prisoner. The several months that they held Atahualpa allowed the Spanish to send for reinforcements and come to understand the complex politics of the empire. Once Atahualpa was killed, the Spanish swiftly crowned a puppet Emperor in his place, allowing them to maintain their hold on power. They also marched first on Cuzco and then on Quito, eventually securing the empire. By the time one of their puppet rulers, Manco Inca (Atahualpas brother) realized that the Spanish had come as conquerors and started a rebellion it was too late. There were some repercussions on the Spanish side. After the conquest of Peru was complete, some Spanish reformers - most notably Bartolomà © de las Casas - began asking disturbing questions about the attack. After all, it was an unprovoked attack on a legitimate monarch and resulted in the massacre of thousands of innocents. The Spanish eventually rationalized the attack on the grounds that Atahualpa was younger than his brother Huà ¡scar, which made him a usurper. It should be noted, however, that the Inca did not necessarily believe that the eldest brother should succeed his father in such matters. As for the natives, the capture of Atahualpa was the first step in the near-total destruction of their homes and culture. With Atahualpa neutralized (and Huà ¡scar murdered on his brothers orders) there was no one to rally resistance to the unwanted invaders. Once Atahualpa was gone, the Spanish were able to play off traditional rivalries and bitterness to keep the natives from uniting against them.

He was also the first Roman Catholic elected president (Preston, 2007). Both momentous accomplishments still stand almost 50 years later. For students do not comprehend the importance of changing more than their location during the transition. A student must be psychologically, physically, and emotionally mature to pursue college and not venture into a point of no return. Dropping out of college makes the outlook of the conversion difficult to acquire. Individuals should take their time on deciding which college and/or university is the best match for them. There are various reasons that cause persons not to prosper. Issues that individuals may come upon might leave a lifelong scar. It takes hours to get simple necessities such as milk. All this is because of the nuclear war in the Northern Hemisphere. This nuclear war has wiped out every living thing, including all humans, throughout countries like China, Europe, and even the United States. It all began with a fight between Russia and China, who wanted to destroy each others land. They managed this with nuclear bombs, and without realizing the consequences, killed off their own people along with everybody else due to the radiation that was left behind. The radiation has killed all forms of life in the Northern Hemisphere so far, and is now steadily approaching the Southern Hemisphere; the only place left on the planet with life. Lieutenant Commander Peter Holmes lives in Melbourne with his wife, Mary and their infant, Jennifer. They, along with everyone else in Australia, have heard and known that the radiation is slowly coming and scientist have predicted that they only have until September before it spreads throughout Australia, killing them all with a slow sickness. This sickness includes symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea, and trembling. It could take anywhere from three days to three weeks to die, depending on ones resistance in their body. Peter is aware of the short time he has left to live out his life, yet his wife Mary fails to realize that there will be no next year, or next spring. She continues to plan ahead as if she will still be alive years or even months from then. Peter helps to comfort her by allowing her to think this way and buying her things such as flowers for the garden that will not bloom until the next year. Peter is called on assignment in the beginning of the book to go on a cruise aboard the U.S.S. Scorpion, the only submarine left. The goal of this cruise is to see if there is any form of life in the northern cities of Cairns, Port Moresby and Darwin. Any form of life would include birds, plants, animals or vegetation. On this cruise, the crew in unsuccessful in finding any forms of life except one dog roaming around. They go back to the port in Melbourne and are docked for some time. While docked, Peter invites the Commander Dwight Towers to stay with him and his wife for the weekend to go sailing and swimming. Mary decides she wants this to be an adventure for Dwight, and therefore invites her friend Moira Davidson. Moira seems to be different then most girls; very forward and drinks too much, and strong in her beliefs. Yet her and Dwight manage to establish a friendship, which they maintain throughout the book. A few weeks later, another cruise is assigned, both involving Commander Dwight Towers and Peter Holmes. This cruise will be much more difficult and more strenuous. They plan to go up to the United States and around the west coast of Canada to see if they can find the radio signals they have been receiving from where they think is Seattle. The navel officers believe that there must be someone up there running the radio stations to be getting signals. The cruise is planned to take two months, while being submerged underwater for twenty-seven days of those two months. Before Peter leaves for his cruise he wants to make sure that his wife and daughter are taken care of if the radiation were to come quicker then expected and he was not there to help her or be with her. He goes to a nearby chemist for information on what happens to a person when hit with radiation sickness and what to do when it happens. Apart from this high debt also negatively affect the investment rates and growth of the country because of huge cash flow and has effects of moral hazards. However, on the opposite side, if external debt is considered at the level of foreign borrowings, then it could have a positive impact on growth and investment of the country. The Laffer curve represents the relation between the investment and the face value of the debt. The expected amount for repayment falls when the level of outstanding debt increases beyond the specified mark. So according to the Laffer curve, the expected payment would reduce with the increa se in the face value of debt (Zawalinska, 2004, p. 5-6). Due to this less knowledge, managers straggling to handle employees problems in a proper way and they are not guiding the employees in a line to achieving organisations goal. Because of this many qualified employees are trying to find a job in other organization where having a high-quality management. If qualified employees leave the organisation, organisations goal achievement result will be negative. So the managers should have jam-packed knowledge about organisational behaviour. In this point you will think what is organisational behaviour? There are many definitions for this but simply can say, for a act getting different responds from different people and the way of reaction between two people in the office situation. So when manager while working with them, he/she can identify their personality and he/she can categorize them with Big Five personality traits. So initially manager has to identify the needs and based on that needs he/she can motivate the employee by provide incentives. There are many theories from many researchers to identify the needs. But Maslows hierarchy of need theory and Herzbergs two factor theories are mostly consider by decision makers. Motivational system can be identified by categorize the employees needs under these theories. For an example if an employee has a need for job security, manager can motivate him by giving long term contract, job related training programme etc. 3.3 Job Satisfaction What is job satisfaction? How manager can satisfy the employee? Simply can say that getting positive result from the one employees job appraisal or job experience, job satisfaction is one of the important attitude. In the job satisfaction many internal factors will influence like the work itself, Payment, Promotion opportunities, Supervision and Co-workers, but in the meanwhile some external factors also influencing. For an example one person is working in the developed area with all internal external facilities. But suddenly management has transferred him to the remote area with same job, where is no external facilities like his previous worked area (travelling facilities, good food etc). When they observed his performance after transfer, it was lesser than previous.
